Like last year, a crowdfunding initiative will bolster the prize pool of the Masters Tours beyond. I just wanted to share a thought I had recently in regard to how WoW and Blizzard compare to some other competition against a background of my not-so-unique situation. But a year and a half ago I made a big move to the US, and now live here. How did it reflect on my friends, communities, and gaming? Not much. Except for WoW. I played Destiny 1, and it was always cross-region. There was no magical excuse to split their player base in 2 and lock your progress to a region. Only in Destiny 2 they introduced really annoying split between NA and EU, so we had to go through bothersome process of restarting the game and client, keeping 2 separate friend lists, etc… But at least progress was not locked to a region. Then later, when Destiny 2 left Battlenet and moved to Steam it was a great relief to me at least that it was no longer necessary to deal with regional separation. When I sit down to play in the evening — EU is usually asleep. Alternatively, they just do not care about helping their players connect or stay connected with their friends and communities in which case all the fancy-talk from Blizzcon about communities and connecting people is questionable. TL;DR: While other game developers are breaking down barriers between different platforms right now and have long broken barriers between regions, Blizzard continuously elects to ignore it and stand by its outdated and backward way Destiny 2 served as a perfect example. All the talk about data centers, etc… in the age of Gigabit internet and cloud computation is ridiculous, many other games do what Blizzard used to describe as impossible. Just look to Xbox One for the former and the Fallout series for the latter, both of which suffered massively from attempting these strategies in recent years. Net, Blizzard and its audience are better placed than most to jump on the bandwagon, but it leaves big question marks all the same. Then there is also the release date. If Diablo IV is the last release of a dying generation, it will struggle. Since its release in , over 50 million gamers have jumped into Overwatch to enjoy its joyously colourful, infinitely playable online hero shooting. However, how many still play? While still very popular, both in homes and in the esports community, the boom in free-to-play Battle Royale games led by Fortnite and Apex Legends , has no doubt made an impact. Even if Blizzard is taking a curious approach to Overwatch 2.
